Vintage Farmhouse Suitcase Side Table

Vintage Farmhouse Suitcase Side Table

Rather than spending money on buying a side table for my daughter's bedroom I wanted to used things that we already had. Using an old suitcase and a cane basket I turned them into a Vintage Farmhouse Suitcase Side Table | See how | www.raggedy-bits.com

For a recent makeover in my Daughters room, we were short on a side table. So rather than having to go out and buy one I really wanted to try and use things that I already had. She had an old square basket that had a flip top lid which she used as a laundry basket. It was pretty worn and needed some loving. So armed with my paint brush and some chalk mix paint inspiration struck. This is where my Vintage Farmhouse Suitcase Side Table project came to life!

Supplies needed:

  • Cane basket or something similar
  • Vintage Suitcase
  • White Chalk Mix Paint
  • Drop Cloth Scrap
  • French Script Stencil
  • Spouncer
  • Black Americana Acrylic paint
  • Number Tag
  • Small Peg
  • Glue Gun

As you can see from the picture the basket sure had seen better days. Yes, the cane is coming away in certain areas but the overall structure of the basket is fine. I know that most people would just throw this away but I just think it adds to the character of the piece! Don’t you think?

Step 1 –  Using some white chalk mix paint lightly give the entire basket a coat of paint. You’re better off starting with lighter coats and then adding more to get the coverage you want. Otherwise the paint clumps and gives an uneven look.

Step 2 – Cut out a piece of scrap drop cloth. Then stencil on the french script using your spouncer and black paint. Let dry. Once dry peg on your number tag with your small peg and then glue gun to the front of the basket.

Step 3 – Sit your Vintage suitcase on the top and style!
