How To Make Vintage Farmhouse Napkin Rings
What is the best way to mix milk paint?
Milk Paint is such a fun paint to use. I have always found using warm water and adding the powder first then the water and mixing it about 10 minutes before you start your project to be the best way to mix milk paint.
Supplies needed:
- 2 toilet paper inserts
- Sweet Pickins Milk Paint- Sweetwater
- IOD Decor Moulds – Lock And Key
- IOD – Air Dry Clay
- Sweet Pickins Milk Paint- Grit
- Cling On! Brushes – Round
- Sweet Pickins Milk Paint- Clear Oil Wax
- 1/2″ Old Craft Brush
- Paper Towel
- Hair Dryer or Heat Gun
- Corn Flour
- Scissors
- Wood Glue
Step 1 – Add 1 tbsp of Sweetwater to one part warm water and mix. Let sit for about 10 minutes mixing occasionally. Using your brush give the toilet paper inserts 2 coats of milk paint including the inside.
Step 2 – Use a hairdryer or heat gun to dry to activate the milk paint to get a nice crackled effect.

Step 3 – Measure where the centre of your toilet paper inserts are and cut in half.
Mould Making Time
Step 4 – Using some cornflour, dust the moulds you want to use from the Lock & Key Mould. Press the clay into the moulds and using a scraper remove any excess clay.
Step 5 – While the clay is still wet take your wood glue and apply to your toilet paper inserts. You can cut the moulds to fit and add elements to fit and join your design together. Let clay set for about 1/2 hr.
Painting Time
Step 6 – Paint over the moulds and let dry. Be gentle not to disrupt the moulds. Be sure to paint any parts that may be poking up in the centre. Then using an old craft brush apply the Clear Oil Wax.
Step 7 – Pop out some Grit. You won’t need a lot and while the Clear Oil Wax is still wet brush over each napkin ring with grit. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
Step 8 – Using some paper towel wipe away the excess clear oil wax. Leave overnight.
And you’re all done! Perfect for your next family gathering to add some Vintage Farmhouse Charm to your table setting.

Your napkin rings are so pretty and the colours you chose are stunning. I have never used that paint yet, but will look into it next time I have a piece of furniture to paint.
Sam, your napkin rings are so pretty. Love the keyhole style of the moulds and such a pretty color too. One would never know they were made with the coveted TP roll!
