This set of shelves have been on my to-do list for far too long! And is much needed in the studio to display some more goodies. So today I’m sharing how to upcycle some old shelves using stamps.
How To Upcycle Old Shelves Using Stamps
Should I use Ink or Paint When stamping on furniture?
Depending on what sort of look you’re after will determine if you should use ink or paint. Ink gives you more of a crisper image. Whereas paint gives more of a mottled look.
If you use paint be sure to add some clear glaze or extender to make sure the open time of the paint is longer and doesn’t dry too quickly.
Supplies needed:
- An Old Shelf
- TSP
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Seaside
- Iron Orchid Designs Decor Ink – Mixing White
- Brayer
- 120 grit sandpaper
- IOD – Rose Toile Decor Stamp
- Brush
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Clear Wax
- Wax Brush
Step 1 – Give the whole piece a good clean with TSP. Then grab your brush and give the entire shelf 2 coats of Seaside.
Step 2 – Using your 120 grit sandpaper lightly distress to your liking.

Step 3 – Lay your shelves flat. Pop-out some white mixing ink and load up your brayer. Apply to stamp and start to stamp the backboard of the shelves.
Step 4 – Once the ink has dried apply wax to seal in all your hard work.
Happy Painting & Stamping!

This shelf will be so handy Sam. I love the idea of using stamps and trying with ink. A new technique to try. I have been inking with letter stamps and so wish you lived closer. Beautiful job. Pinned.
It sure will be Leanna! We need some more display shelves in the shop so this will surely do the trick! I hope you have a ball when you get the chance to have a play!
You did a great job, Sam. You have some very interesting photo props, love them. Pinned
This is absolutely gorgeous! I love the colour, the stamps and the beautiful styling! Even though I upcycle furniture myself, I never stop being amazed at how easy it is to transform a plain piece into a thing of beauty! As the saying goes, “There is beauty in everything but not everyone sees it!” Pinned!
Thank you so much, Jayne!! And I couldn’t agree with you more!
Very pretty upcycle, Sam! I love the color and I’m a sucker for all things French so I’m loving those pretty stamps too.
Thank you, Marie! I had an absolute ball with this one!
