It feels so good to be back writing and creating again after my poor dad has been through absolute hell and back. Sharing a Thrifted Milk Paint Side Table Makeover Using the Napkin Method. I’ve become the sole carer for him now after having his leg amputated. I can not begin to tell you how life has changed dramatically in just a very short 4 and a bit weeks. But after nearly losing dad it sure has put a few things into perspective and my goal is to get him fully independent again. Let’s get down to a fun project that I started before dad got sick for this months Farmhouse Hens.
Thrifted Milk Paint Side Table Makeover Using the Napkin Method
Supplies needed:
- Thrifted Side Table
- Sweet Pickins Milk Paint – In a Pickle
- Warm Water
- Whisk
- Plastic Cup
- Sweet Pickins Milk Paint – Top Coat
- 3ply Napkin
- Sweet Pickins Milk Paint – Dark Oil Wax
- 2 x Paint Brushes
- Lint Free Cloth
- 120 grit and 80 grit Sandpaper
- Sander
Step 1 – Mix 1:1 warm water and In A Pickle Milk Paint with a whisk for about 5 to 10 minutes. Sand the entire piece with 80 grit sandpaper to remove shine and uneven surface.
Step 2 – Give 2 coats of Milk Paint letting dry in between each coat. Distress to your liking.
Step 3 – Separate the Paper Napkin keeping the top layer.
Step 4 – Carefully tear around the design that you want to apply to your piece.
Step 5 – Put a layer of top coat on the piece of the furniture where you would like to place the napkin. Carefully apply your napkin decal to your piece. Starting from the centre and patting out towards the edge to remove any air bubbles. Let dry overnight. Sand lightly with 120 grit sandpaper block to distress to your liking. Then apply a coat of top coat. Let dry.
Step 6 – Using an old brush apply the dark Oil Wax and let sit for 10 minutes.
Step 7 – Using your lint free cloth wipe off the dark oil wax. Let cure overnight.
There you have a fun little side table to make over using the napkin method and milk paint. The dark oil wax has to be one of the best finishes I have used so far and can’t wait to try the clear oil wax.

This is beautiful Sam. I recently did a project with napkins but covered the entire surface. Using the main pattern as a focal point is brilliant. Love the idea. I want this table for a coffee bar.
