This poor old cupboard has had a very good life. It has been busy living a cupboards dream! Holding all of my daughter’s clothes, games and books from the age of 2. She is now almost 21, left the nest and it’s been continuing to live the dream. But instead holding all of my crafty goodies. It came to us as a gift from a friend that knew how much I LOVE old things. It didn’t come to us in great shape but it sure served my daughter and now me well. Finally, after all of these years, instead of going into retirement it’s getting a well deserved Old Farmhouse Cupboard Makeover.
Old Farmhouse Cupboard Furniture Makeover
The previous owners {not my friend} loved it so much that they stained it with some kind of something I have not come across before. Including the beautiful old hardware.
Luckily for this little number, I have teamed up with a lovely bunch of bloggers who don’t give up so easy either on pieces of furniture. Be sure to check out below their brilliant Furniture Refreshes!
Each of the bevelled mirrors had been scratch quite badly and that weird stain was alllll around their beautiful edges.
So as you can see it was definitely calling out for some love.
Supplies needed:
- Fusion Mineral Paint – TSP
- Sander
- 120 and 220 grit sandpaper
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Champlain
- Paint Brush
- Rustoleum Mat Black
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Beeswax Stick
Step 1 – Wash down completely with TSP. This gets rid of all the grime and dirt. Make sure that the surface is completely dry. Sand away any lumps or bumps with 220 grit sandpaper. This gives you a nice fresh canvas to get your Picasso on!
Step 2 – Tape off the hardware and give them a light coat of black. Let dry completely and then spray again. Repeat moving the handle backwards and forwards to make it easier to spray the other side. Let dry.
Then grab your beeswax stick and rub where you do not want the paint to adhere to.
Step 4 – Grab your brush, paint and start painting. I gave this piece 2 coats and didn’t waste any time with distressing. Because the beauty of Fusion Mineral Paint is that it has a top coat in it and the longer you leave it the tougher it becomes making it harder to distress.
So if you’re like me and love the distressed Farmhouse look distress as soon as your final coat is touch dry.
Doesn’t she now look all nice and Farmhousey? Brand new sparkly drawer pulls and all ready for her next cupboard adventure.
This won’t be her forever spot. But with my craft room still in a shambles after moving this will do for now.
Be sure to see what my very clever Furniture Refresh pals have been up to!
Happy Painting!

Wow!! This old cupboard turned out so wonderfully! You gave it so much charm. I love black hardware on white too, I just think it pops! Wonderful makeover!!
Black and white are such a classic look aren’t the Michelle!? Thank you! I’m so glad you like it! 🙂
Love the new/old look you gave this cupboard. Great job.
Thank you so much, Anj!
Sam,

Yes very lucky! My friends know me well!
Amazing Sam, you are the queen of distressing, it is absolutely gorgeous!!
Gee I don’t know about that Katrin! LOL but thank you! So glad you like it!
Painting it white really brings out all the pretty details! Great makeover Sam!
Sure did Mary! It still amazes me what the power of paint can do!
Oh man, that cupboard turned out so gorgeous Sam. Who wouldn’t love something like this in their home. Beautifully done
Thank you so much, Michelle!! I coped a bit of silliness from people because I didn’t restore it but they didn’t see the effect of what it had been painted in originally 🙁 but hey I know that if something can be saved I will but if it can’t I will breath new life into it! Thank you for your sweet kind words!
That’s stunning Sam! Great job!
Thank you so much, Deborah! I was tickled pink with how it turned out!
I think this piece is absolutely beautiful. But I have a question lol so you didn’t have to sand the stain off before using the tsp? I’m looking to redo a beautiful China cabinet I just purchased but I don’t want to sand it down. Looking for any easy way out.
Hi there Nidia, thank you so much for your question. Nope, you don’t but if you are using milk paint and don’t want a super chippy look is always good practice to give your piece a light sand before painting. Good luck with your Cabinet and look forward to seeing it all finished 🙂
As always Sam, another great project from you. This cabinet makeover is BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you so much, Denise! Those are very kind words and greatly appreciated!
