Recently some sweet blogging friends and I decided to challenge each other to try and give a room in our homes a makeover for $100! I immediately knew which room was going to get some decorating love. My daughter’s room was in need of some much-needed love because it still had boxes that were unpacked from when we moved in 4 years ago! So I thought the best place to start was with a side table that she had which of course I had all intensive purposes of painting along time ago but time just got away from me! Which brings me to sharing her French Script Side Table makeover.

Along with the same group of lovely blogging friends that I will be joining in with the challenge, we were all asked to try out Diva of DIY‘s Chalk Mix and see what we thought of it!

Supplies needed:

  • Side Table – I picked these draws up off the side of the road but I’m sure your local Thrift Store will have a tonne to choose from 🙂
  • Diva of DIY’s Chalk Mix
  • 2 x Paint Colours- I used a low sheen grey colour and Antique White.
  • Paint Brush
  • Sander
  • 120 grit  sandpaper
  • French Script Stencil – I made mine on my Silhouette Cameo but this one is very similar from Deco Art
  • Spouncer
  • Americana White Acrylic Paint – for the Stenciling
  • Wax
  • Drawer Pulls

To see how I mix up the Chalk mix I made a short video! (Please excuse the wobbliness! I have yet to get myself a tripod!!!) 😉

Step 1– Mix up equal parts of Warm water to the chalk mix using a paint mixer and mix together until combined. Don’t stress if it feels a little gritty it all sands out at the end. Let stand while you get your side table prepared. Mix up the secondary colour if you decide to use a second colour.

HANDY HINT:
I did absolutely nothing to my daughter’s side table except wipe off some dust bunnies using a microfiber cloth! This is part of the reason that I love to use chalk mix as there is very minimal prep work involved. If the surface that you are painting has a high gloss finish then I would recommend giving it a quick sand using 180 grit sandpaper 🙂

Step 2– Starting with the drawer fronts and give them a coat of your grey chalk mix. While that is drying start to paint the rest of the side table. Give each piece 2 coats of paint letting it dry in between coats. You may have to give the white an extra coat pending on how dark the wood on your side table is.

Sanding Time

Step 3 – Grab your sander and 120 grit sanding paper and sand away until you reach your desired distressed look. If you don’t wish to distress at all then use a sanding pad and give a light sand.

Step 4 – Take your script stencil, spouncer, and white paint and stencil lightly onto the drawer fronts. Let the paint dry and then sand.

    1. She was pretty chuffed Debbie! Just sad that she can’t enjoy it as much because she moved out to continue on with her next chapter in life 🙁 At least she can enjoy it when she comes home for a visit!
