After hubby’s 92 year old Pop passed away recently I wanted to make something for him to remember his Pop by. He lived in a little town called Bogan Gate with his wife and 4 kids where they had a farm with sheep and lots of grains. This project fitted in perfect with this months International Bloggers Club theme being all about wool. Sharing How To Paint And Stamp A Farmhouse Sign.
How To Paint And Stamp A Farmhouse Sign
Bogan Gate has a population of 306 and the name ‘Bogan Gate‘ is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning “the birthplace of a great leader in an Aboriginal Tribe”. It is well known for a polo match between Great Britain and Australia back in 1897.
Hubbys Nan and Pop bread many sheep over their time on the farm and produced a lot of wool for Australia’s wool industry. So today I’m sharing how to paint and stamp a farmhouse sign incorporating wool in memory of Nan and Pop.
Supplies needed:
- Plywood and wood for the frame
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Raw Silk
- Brush – Cling On! F30
- IOD Decor Stamp – Wreath Builder Classic
- IOD Decor Stamp – Typesetting
- Brayer
- IOD Decor Stamp – Farm Animals
- IOD Ink – Stone Gray
- 120 grit sandpaper
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Chocolate
- Chux
- Fusion Mineral Paint – Clear Wax
- Wax Brush
- Brad Nail Gun
Step 1 – Using your brush, give the plywood 2 coats of Raw Silk letting each coat dry completely.
Step 2 – Using your barnwood planks decor stamp layout the stamps to give you an idea of a faux barnwood panel.
Stamping Time!
Step 3 – Load up your brayer with ink and then apply to your the barn wood planks using the joiner stamp and knot stamp too. This gives a nice real feel to the design. Let completely dry.
Step 4 – Then taking the Typesetting and Farm Animal Stamp lay out your design onto your sign stamp down. Because there are only 1 of each letter you will need to space out your sign moving the letters along as you go. Once your happy place the transfer film over your design. I used 2 transfer sheets joined together with painters tape to be able to pick up the whole design. Load up your brayer and apply to the stamps then flip and press gently onto your design. Let completely dry.
Step 5 – Then go back and fill in with the stamps with the missing letters. Using one of the stamps from the Wreath Builder apply to either side of the sheep. Let completely dry and then distress to your liking. Apply wax with your wax brush to seal in all of your hard work.
Stain your frame using watered down Chocolate. Apply with a chux cloth. Let dry.
Step 6 – Then using your brad gun carefully brad together the small parts of the frame to the larger ones to form your frame. Place the frame over your design line up and then clamp into place. Then using your brad gun nail into place.
Now your frame is all ready to be hung! These sorts of signs are a lovely way to capture a part of our story.
