If you’re anything like me, you probably have a deep love for unique, farmhouse-style decor. And when I spotted this adorable sheep planter over at Hammons Nest, my heart just about skipped a beat. I knew I had to make one of my own. But there was just one little snag—I’m in Australia, where we don’t have the luxury of popping into a Dollar Tree or Dollar General for affordable craft supplies. So, when I found the same sheep planter on Amazon, I practically jumped out of my skin with excitement! Sharing today my spin on how to create a Farmhouse Sheep Planter!

- Cheese Cloth
- Brush
- Voodoo Gel Stain – Tobacco Road
- Mini Bells
- Coffee

Cleaning and Preparing:
Prepping the Planter
- Start by giving your sheep planter a good clean. Even new items can have dust or residues that prevent the paint from adhering properly. A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth should do the trick.

- Grab your Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint in Cotton and start with a thin, even coat. Chalk paint is amazing because it requires minimal prep and dries quickly. Repeat if needed.
- Let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next.

- Add some script stamping to the sheep in areas. Let completely dry.
- Once the paint is dry, it’s time to give our sheep a bit of rustic charm. Using Dixie Belle Voodoo Gel Stain in Tobacco Road, apply the stain to the entire planter to age or darken.
- You can use a brush or a lint-free cloth to apply the stain. If you go a bit heavy-handed, don’t panic! Simply grab a chux cloth and wipe off any excess until you achieve the desired look.
Now Time To Embellish:
Cheesecloth isn’t just for cooking! It’s a fantastic way to add texture and interest to your project.
6. Cut a small strip and tie a knot in the centre and glue it to your sheep planter.
7. Then glue your mini bells in place. This little detail adds a charming, whimsical touch that really completes the farmhouse look.

The Result? A Farmhouse Dream!
This project might have been one of the most expensive upcycles I’ve ever done, but the end result was worth every penny. The combination of Dixie Belle’s high-quality paints, the rustic stain, and the thoughtful details like cheesecloth and bells turned an ordinary sheep planter into a farmhouse showstopper.
So, if you’re in Australia like me, don’t be discouraged by the lack of Dollar Tree or Dollar General. With a bit of creativity and some savvy online shopping, you can create beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces that bring warmth and character to your home.
Final Thoughts
Upcycling can sometimes come with a higher price tag, especially when sourcing materials from overseas, but the unique and personalized results are priceless. Give this project a try, and you’ll see just how rewarding it can be to create something truly special.
