Whilst planning a gallery wall on a very blank wall of ours on our stair case, inspiration stuck me to make a sign with our family rules. I could see a picture in my head of how I wanted it to turn out and set to making my DIY Family Rules Sign. I have always loved having positive little sayings throughout our house and when my kids were little this was one way that I help them learn to read and think positive!

Supplies needed:
- 2 pieces of scrap wood 13.5″ long
- A3 size thick brown kraft paper – I picked my roll up at my local K Mart store – Amazon has a similar one which comes in different lengths.
- Scrapbook Trimmer
- Freezer Paper
- Iron
- Drop Saw
- Soft Cloth
- Dark Wax or polish
- Clear wax
- Sand Paper – 120 grit
- Staple gun
- Printer – able to print A3
- Jute
Let’s get making your very own DIY Family Rules Sign!! Cut out a piece of the brown kraft paper to A3 size. The best way I found to do this was by using a plain piece of A3 paper out of my printer, I ruled around the outside and then used my scrapbook trimmer to then cut out the brown craft paper and give it nice straight edges. Then using the freezer paper, iron it onto the back of the brown kraft paper so that it sticks. This process helps you get the kraft paper through the printer by making it a little thicker and it also helps it hang better.
HANDY HINT: Ensure that your iron is set to have no steam otherwise the craft paper will crinkle as you iron.
Cut down your scrap pieces of wood to size using your drop saw. Sand the edges where you have cut to give a nice smooth edge. I cut each of my scrap pieces to be 13.5″ long. That way this leaves a little over hang either side of the print. Using a soft cloth and either a dark wax or polish rub over your wood pieces to desired colour. As I used polish I then waxed to seal.
Then in publisher or word, you can personalise your own Family Rules or if you like ours grab you can grab your copy
here. Once you have got your rules to how you like it, print out your verse onto your prepared kraft paper.
HANDY HINT: Make sure you set your paper size to A3 and also when printing. I forgot and had to go through the whole process again!!! 🙂
Then taking your staple gun stable your Family Rules to the back of your stained pieces of scrap wood.
HANDY HINT: I have allowed approximately 1cm of paper at the top and the bottom to make it easier to staple.
Cut a piece of a desired length of jute, make a loop at one end and stable several times so that the jute doesn’t slip out when hung.
There you have your very own DIY Family Rules Sign to hang with pride in your home.
I still have a bit of photo printing to do before I can get my gallery up but hey you have to start somewhere!

This is really cool, but so are all the decorative touches in your home. They are all so pretty and meaningful, and it’s a great reminder to everyone as they walk upstairs to bed that they are loved.
